Avoid The Strain Train: Don’t Get Married

stress
A new study shows that women in less-than-satisfactory relationships are not only at a risk of depression, but also cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. Together, these symptoms create a disease called metabolic syndrome, says Nancy Henry, who is a doctoral candidate in clinical health psychology at the University of Utah, and the author of this study.

Metabolic syndrome has been shown to lead to a greater risk of stroke, diabetes or heart disease, and this new study might be the first that shows depression from a strained marriage as a new route that leads to metabolic syndrome. The women that participated in the study, which followed 276 couples who had been married an average of 27.5 years and were around age 54 on the average, proved that the negative emotions that come from a strained marriage lead directly to depression and then metabolic syndrome.

Although men were a part of the study, as well, it seems that metabolic syndrome was only developed through depression in women, though men were just as likely as women to have depressed feelings that developed as a result of a negative marriage; more research is needed on the topic.
